CHAPTER TWENTY
“Excuse me,” Beau said.
They were back at the lighthouse. Back to some sanity.
Lacey was brushing her teeth, and the door to the bathroom was wide open. Henry was in bed, sound asleep. She mumbled something and moved out of the way. Beau grabbed his own toothbrush—the electric kind, of course, to keep his celebrity smile whiter than ever—and got to work himself.
Two adults, one tiny sink. Usually, he waited for her to finish, but tonight he was barging in. Hell, she’d left the door open, almost like a dare.
“I get what you’re doing,” she said around her toothbrush.
“Oh, yeah?” he said around his.
She nodded vigorously.
He shrugged.
She finished first. He had a good view of her from behind. Then it was his turn. By then she’d already left. She was downstairs, turning off all the lights.
He followed.
“You’re mad,” she said, straightening the coffee table in the sitting area, where Henry, Bob, and Carol had been coloring. “But so am I. You were trying to be nice. But then you had to go all high-concept family drama on us. Me. You. Together. If only.”
“Out of the kindness of my heart.”
“Or an insane desire to be in control of everything around you because you’re used to calling the shots. Or was it because you’re simply accustomed to playing the hero who rescues everyone else?”
“Hey—”
“But it wasn’t quite far enough to get their approval. They needed me on board the love train, too. So what was I supposed to do?”
“Serves you right you have to hang out with Walt until they decide to leave.”
“Every cloud has a silver lining. I plan to bask in their approval for a week, and we’ll get back to normal when I call them and say we’ve broken up. Hopefully by then, they’ll have bonded with Henry and we’ll have taken one teensy step forward to becoming a normal family. It never would have happened without your crazy generous offer to help, so guess what—I’m not mad anymore. And you shouldn’t be, either.”
“Why not?”
She stared at him. “Because I’m ready to be your lighthouse date. Not your wife. You can woo me. But I make no promises.”
“For real?”
She nodded slowly. “You’re a movie star. You can have anyone you want. And I just didn’t care to be one of those women, succumbing to your obvious charms.”
“So … why now?”
“I’ve decided you’re succumbing to my charms. I can live with that. You’re a lucky man, Beau Wilder. And don’t get comfy. The last thing I need is to become a cliché. I refuse to let it happen.”
“Oh, yeah?” He came close and put his arms around her.
“I might decide to revert to our previous roommate relationship at any moment. But kissing you at Fort Sumter reminded me that it had been a long time since I’d made out with someone who knows what grits are. Someone who loves Southern sunshine and who notices whether the carriage horses are well fed and watered and who rubs their noses and talks to them.
